Creature Comforts

I'm worried about where we will be sleeping, what we will be eating, and if we are riding in the chicken/pig buses my returned missionary son talks about.
Many people are concerned about traveling in a foreign country. We pay special attention to "creature comforts" so that your entire experience will be enjoyable! Read on. . .

HOTELS
One tour participant said it this way; "We have traveled all over the world and I've never stayed in hotels like this!" The first 2 nights we stay at "La Quinta Real". "Real" means royal and ROYAL IT IS! It sets on the top of a beautiful green hill and boasts a view of the entire city with volcanoes in the background. It is built to look like a very old, huge Spanish colonial mansion estate, but is less than 5 years old. The gardens and walkways with their waterfalls and beautiful tropical plants seem to whisk you off to paradise. The buildings are built on several different levels and there are cobblestone walkways and stairways (and elevators!) from one to another. The rooms are gorgeous, with private marble bathrooms, ironing boards and irons, turkish bathrobes and slippers, etc. We return for another 2 night stay and feel like we are coming home.
Hotel Atitlan is built right on the shore of what many have said to be the most beautiful lake in the world. This hotel is nestled in some of the most beautiful gardens we've seen, with garden paths leading to the beautiful pool, the private beach on the lake, the rose garden, etc. We have our breakfasts on the patio outside overlooking beautiful Lake Atitlan.(2 nights)
The hotel in Reu is not the greatest, but it is clean and each room has it's own bathroom. We stay there 1 night only in this tropical setting. It has a nice pool, the food is great, and it's the BEST HOTEL IN TOWN!
We spend our last 2 nights in a 16th century monastery-turned-5-star-hotel. Most people say that this one is their favorite. Others say it's a toss-up between the monastery and Quinta Real. Still others like the one on the lake the best. Every night the employees light over 700 candles along the walkways and in the gardens. It is furnished with European-style antiques, art and sculpture. There are fountains, tropical birds and HUGE fresh flower arrangements EVERYWHERE. There are 2 museums on the grounds and a candle-making factory that makes candels exactly as they did during the 16th century. The rooms are very comfortable and inviting.
COMMENT:
The hotels are the best I've ever stayed in. More than ever anticipated.

FOOD & WATER
We eat only in safe, clean places, usually in our hotel; sometimes in nearby restaurants. The establishments that base their reputation on tourist satisfaction are very particular about their food service, or they would be out of business. The breakfasts are favorites and usualy consist of an enormous buffet with an incredible selection of local and American cuisine. Fresh tropical fruits are served in abundance and are delicious. Have you ever tried watermelon juice or mango juice for breakfast? Dinners usually consist of soup or salad, chicken, fish or beef, a vegetable, sometimes rice or potato, and dessert. The only complaint we have had with the food is that there is entirely too much!!
Bottled water is plentiful and readily available everywhere.
COMMENT:
The food was excellent and FUN!! I felt comfortable eating everything and the 2 meals a day were plenty. Good variety. I loved the breakfasts!
--Holly Larson, Mesa, AZ

TRANSPORTATION:
NO CHICKEN/PIG BUSES FOR US, but you will see plenty of them. We fly to and from Guatemala on Continental Airlines; the ground transportation: new Mercedes-Benz touring bus with air-conditioning, bathroom, and coolers that are kept full of ice and bottled water.
We have a very savy local guide who is the best in the business and takes very good care of us all. We have a wonderful, capable, extremely trustworthy chauffeur.
We truly can all relax and enjoy ourselves without worrying about anything.
COMMENT:
The tour bus was luxurious. Loved having air-conditioning, video presentations, and bathroom on board. Thank you for the unlimited supply of cold bottled water always available. --Karen Wilson, Cedar City, UT
